Protecting homeowners from costly exposures.

You may not realize that as a homeowner you are responsible for the underground service lines that run from the street to your home. Service line coverage protects you from losses due to damage or failure of these lines by extending your CAA Home Insurance coverage to underground piping, wiring, valves and more.

What exactly are service lines?

Service lines are those underground pipes and wiring that carry essential services from the city’s main supply into your home. They include:

    • Water lines that deliver the water you use for drinking, bathing, cooking and watering the lawn

    • Sewer lines that carry wastewater from your toilets, sinks and drains into the sewer system or your septic tank

    • Power lines that bring electricity from a power grid to your electrical panel to power your lighting, appliances and more

    • Natural gas and fuel lines that fuel your heating, cooking, gas-powered barbeque, pool heater and more

    • Internet, cable or fibre optic lines that run from your provider’s source into your home, keeping you connected and entertained

Adding Service Line Coverage to your home insurance policy can protect you.

Traditional insurance policies cover damage to your home and detached structures and exclude damaged service lines - even if that damage is the cause of a loss. The cost of excavating and repairing these lines can be significant. Our optional Service Line Coverage ensures our policyholders can be protected in the best way possible.

With Service Line Coverage, you’ll be covered for:

    • Damage to an underground service line that is the result of a failure of this line.

    • Damage to wiring used for communication or data transmission.

    • Additional living expenses, hotel and rental costs if your home becomes uninhabitable during repairs.

    • Damage to outdoor property from the service line failure or from the excavating to repair the line.

    • Costs required to repair/replace the damaged covered service line resulting from a service line failure.

    • Extra costs to make temporary repairs or to expedite permanent repairs/replacements to your service line that is damaged from the service line failure.

How Service Line Coverage works.

Your home insurance protects you against damage to your home and detached structures. It doesn’t cover damaged services lines—even if that damage is the cause of a loss.

By adding Service Line Coverage to your CAA Home Insurance policy, you’ll get protection against all the “what ifs” listed above. If anything were to happen to a service line, you’d simply pay the $500 deductible and then could claim up to $10,000 for any exterior excavation or repairs, and landscape replacement or repairs.

Frozen water line pipe.

During a cold spell, the pipe connecting the public water line from the street to a home froze and burst. The homeowner had to have the water line dug out ($3,900) and replaced ($1,000). A number of trees and shrubs had to be removed at a replacement cost of $950. The extensive repair work also meant the homeowner had to stay in a hotel for two nights ($750).
